DK News Dominic is just finishing his Australian convention tour Dominic is just finishing his Australian convention tour. He appeared in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. Simon wrote a very nice convention report and took some great pictures. At the Perth convention, Dominic reported that, as part of his training in the art of film directing, he has plans in the works for a short film about a boy who has just learned to tell time. Once you read Simon's report and see the photos, you'll also discover that Dominic is a fan of Guinness beer. Many thanks to Simon for his contributions.
Okay, this month’s goodies are so truly magnificent that I know you will all forgive me for not publishing a May issue. You may thank the intrepid Debby A., who brings you the goodies, and the dutiful DNash & friend, who converted them from VHS to digital files. That said, Peep Times is proud to present the one and only Dominic Keating in his 1990 Vidal Sassoon commercials. The first time you watch them you may want to usher your pets, friends, and family to safety. Cats have already been scared by the unseemly squealing, birds have fallen off their perches, and loved ones will never let you live your reaction down. |
Thanks again to Debby, DNash, and to the webmasters for providing, creating, and hosting these videos. Last Month’s Photos We had some technical difficulty with the first issue of the newsletter, which resulted in thumbnail photos without links to the larger images. Bill Gates assures me it won’t happen again. Here they are—enjoy. From the Tampa Vulkon in July 2002 (thanks again to Norm Liddell at USSHaven):

While Simon and many other fans in Australia were busy seeing Dominic for the first time in person, MJ, the Other Convention Queen, attended the MediaWest convention in Lansing, Michigan to speak on seven panels. Media West is one of the largest fan-based multimedia conventions in the country and has been going on for 23 years. It is devoted to cult television, cult movies, and fan fiction. MJ reports that the fans are showing great interest in Enterprise and in the Malcolm Reed character in particular (even without MJ using her formidable powers of persuasion to promote him) : I did one of the two general Enterprise panels, this one being on what the show needed to do to boost ratings. One person out of a packed room professed that he didn't like Reed and thought the character was a waste of time. He was, even without my assistance, nearly driven from the room as various other people began |
discussing how much they liked Reed. Interestingly, this same person was at Eclecticon in November when I did a general ENT discussion there, and had to leave that panel early after Reed-bashing. Uniformly, this has been the only person I've encountered at media cons who's had a bad word for Reed. * * * People are split over the upcoming season between "Great idea" and "let us see what they do with it" -- I didn't hear any "this is a bad idea" complaints. At the fanfic panel, I asked the audience what they liked in ENT fanfic and wanted to read more of. Underneath requests for action stories and romances there was an interesting underlying theme -- almost everyone likes stories with lots of Reed in them. There was a general Star Trek discussion panel at which the low ratings for Enterprise, among a room full of fans, were almost unanimously put on "too much Trek for too many years." After 20 years of no Trek on TV, now there's been 20 with no time Trek has not been on TV. They felt that the franchise needs a break, but only after ENT. Despite the trolls on various boards who urge that the show should be cancelled, nobody professing to be a Trek fan was in favor of taking ENT off the air early even if ENT was not one of their personal favorite series. There are a lot of fans saying that ENT is the first Trek franchise they have really enjoyed since the original series, and almost every person who said that told the panels that this was at least in part because they think the ENT cast has the best overall chemistry since the original series. That's one of the reasons they want to see more Reed -- and also, several commented, more Mayweather. They like the |
cast as a whole so much that they want to see all of the characters being utilized on screen. MJ also reports that the fan interest in Reed has caused fan artists to sit up and take note. At MediaWest, one of the most popular professional fan artists, Jesse McClain, auctioned a portrait of Dominic that she painted from a favorite photograph. A decoupage artist created an ENT jewelry box with several pictures of Reed on it, and a candlemaker made a votive holder with Reed on it as part of a set. Thanks to MJ for taking the time to share her experiences at MediaWest.
The Peeping Gourmet, by Special Guest Star
Just when you thought we were already done handing out the Good Stuff, this month's Peeping Gourmet, unbeknownst to him, is our very own Dominic Keating. We've uncovered for you an article from Canadian TV Guide in which Dominic, as Celebrity Chef, shared two of his own creations. Arden tracked down the article and transcribed it for all of us to enjoy. Celebrity Chef by Barbara Binstein (Canadian TV Guide, Sept. 22, 2001) Dominic Keating’s salad is an Enterprise-ing venture It’s back to the future as the crew of the new starship Enterprise prepares to trek to the stars for its maiden voyage. One hundred years before Scotty even dreamed of beaming anyone up, the first to enlist was munitions expert Lt. Malcolm Reed – a spit-and-polish, by-the-book English gentleman, played by the cheeky Dominic Keating.

Growing up in Leicester, England, 100 miles north of London, Keating fondly remembers watching the original series. “I remember when my dad bought our first colour TV, and I loved Star Trek in colour,” he says. Keating acquired his future itchy phaser finger “practising my Vulcan pinch on the playground.” And when Keating ventured to America in search of stardom, he became hooked on Star Trek: The Next Generation. “I was interested in TNG because Patrick Stewart had the lead role and he was one of the forerunners of English actors coming to Los Angeles, doing what I’m doing now.” It may be one small step for some, but it’s a giant leap for Keating to get to another galaxy far, far away – the kitchen. With the help of his girlfriend, Jill, Keating claims he’s “good at grilling salmon,” and can concoct a “mean salad with fried zucchini and pine nuts in it. It’s just something that kind of invented itself. “The success of the salad is no to over-fry the zucchini, not crisp, but not soft either.” Keating adds, “ and if you do it in some sesame oil it’s all the better. I often stick the frying pan out the front door just to let it sit and cool down.” Other tips? Go easy on the dressing.“ I find that North Americans tend to douse a salad with the dressing, so I’m really fussy about that,” he says. With Keating manning the torpedoes as Lt. Reed, it’s full speed ahead aboard Enterprise. May the sauce be with you. |

Cut salmon piece across the width of the fillet into 12 slices. Thread salmon strips onto skewers. Place in single layer in a shallow dish. Cover and refrigerate. Just before cooking, arrange the salmon skewers on a lightly greased, foil-lined broiling pan; pour ½ cup (125mL) sauce over. Leaving the skewers on the foil, broil or grill the salmon on the barbecue about 5 to 6 inches form the heat source for 3 or 4 minutes or until opaque. Dear Peepy by Shelley
Those of you who have been around the message board for awhile probably won't be too surprised that our mystery writer for Dear Peepy is none other than Shelley. For those those of you who haven't had the experience . . . uh, pleasure of meeting Shelley yet, we've added her fan profile below.
Dear Peepy, My husband doesn't appreciate me taking my Lt. Reed action figure to bed. Yet I find I can't sleep without it. Do you think he would feel more accepting of it if I bought him a puppy? Should I get him a beagle? Please help, Indecent Proposal
Dear Indecent, The Lieutenant Reed action figure isn't as comfortable to sleep with as your husband, so this is what I would suggest: make him dress up like Malcolm before he gets into bed, therefore eliminating both your problems. Make sure he does the British accent properly before you ditch the action figure. Forget the darn puppy. Good luck, Peepy
Dear Peepy, I'm getting married this summer and I feel that my parents are being unsupportive just because I want to have a Star Trek wedding. They patently refuse to dress up as The Captain and T'Pol, but it's my life's dream to be |
given away by Captain Archer! All my friends are going to be there in blue skivvies and we already rented the beagles. What should I do? Dreaming of Resolution in Kansas
Dear DORK, Tell your parents that this is your special day and that if they can't cooperate you may have to hire actors to stand in for them. After all, you said it was your life's dream to be given away by Captain Archer - you never said this role had to be played by your father. So what's stopping you? I'm sure there are plenty of out-of-work actors just dying to pretend to be Scott Bakula for the day. Maybe the thought of not being included in the ceremony will be enough motivation to get your father into that Captain's dress uniform? And your mother into that heavily padded bra? If this doesn't coerce them into changing their minds, at least you'll be given away by Archer and your parents can hold the beagles. Good luck, Peepy
Dear Peepy, I think my marriage may be breaking up. I'm fan of Malcolm Reed, but my husband is a fan of T'Pol. Thing is, I don't think Reed and T'Pol are a good match. I've tried to persuade him that Hoshi would be better, but he still prefers the Vulcan. Then last week this guy down at Toys-R-Us asked me out. He is a fan of Hoshi. Do you think I should accept? Yours sincerely, Perplexed
Dear Perplexed, Are you crazy? Enterprise fans all over the world, slash and otherwise, will be ashamed of you if you don't take advantage of this lucrative opportunity. Try to get T'Pol and Hoshi together and |
then give Malcolm the chance to get in on the action. Of course, the guy-guy-girl situation may cause one of these guys to bail. Pick the one that sticks around. Or maybe it'll make you more comfortable to ditch the kinky one that was willing to stay. There's your answer! You get to pick the one that you find more appealing after presenting them with this crazy situation. But, in the end, it's best not to have an affair - that only leads to disaster - pick one or the other and stick with your decision. Good luck, Peepy
Thanks also to our volunteer question writers – I won't name you lest your reputations be spoiled forever, if that is even possible. We need more volunteers, so get creative and send in a question for Shelley. She can handle it . . .
I'd always heard that action figures are notorious for getting into trouble at conventions (especially Reed action figures), but I didn't believe it until I saw the photographic evidence. These are just a few pictures from the adventures of Trip and Malcolm in Eve Burge’s hilarious Shore Leave (with permission):

Favorite DK roles: Mallos - I love it when he's naughty ;-) Evil, that is . . . Cat or dog person? Cat - my Jakey is the best kitty in the world! What I'm reading right now: Shopaholic Ties the Knot by Sophie Kinsella (third novel in the series) What I'm listening to right now: Rock Steady by No Doubt Favorite DK memorabilia: I don't collect memorabilia - all the memories are in my head - but if it means anything, I got an autograph from Dominic in Toronto which he would've signed un-personalized and I could've sold it on EBay, but I had him personalize it to me cuz I really wanted it . . . okay, fine - maybe I do collect some things! ;-) Other actors I like: Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Jimmy Fallon, Russell Crowe My other obse--I mean, focus: Saturday Night Live - no matter how bad it gets, American Idol (Ruben and Clay ROCK!!!!!!!!! Okay, I'll shut up...) Claim to fame: I once played a hooker on a cancelled comedy show on Canadian television . . . seriously, I did (it's still on reruns to this day and I still get "was that YOU?!?!?" every so often). I was also the star of my kindergarten play - Peter Rabbit . . . really!
|
| Screen Name:
Karen or Karen1Nicola Birthdate: November 23 Location: S. Wales, UK Originally from: Unfortunately I haven't left it yet! Real life occupation: Scientist and part-time Writer Favorite Peep color: Purple Favorite Reed scene: Shuttlepod One - all of it! Not only do we have Dominic, but we have Dominic and Connor (whom I also drool over regularly!!) - could TV get any better?! (But I'm not shallow - honest!) Favorite Reed line: There are soooo many, I couldn't possibly pick just one!!! Favorite DK roles: Apart from his brief appearance on Buffy, I've only ever noticed DK as Malcolm, so it has to be that! Cat or dog person? Both, actually!! What I'm reading right now: James Clemens - Wit'ch Storm (Book Two of The Banned and the Banished). And I'm also wading through several scientific texts, but that doesn't really count, does it? What I'm listening to right now: I have a friend who owns a company called Diamond Productions and they sign up singers and performers etc, and he found out a couple of weeks ago that I can sing, so now I'm going through his music databanks for several audition pieces, cause he wants to sign me up - eek! Favorite DK memorabilia: With the exception of the Enterprise calendar and Season One box set, I don't have any - boohoo! Why? Although I've been an Enterprise fan from the beginning, I have been obsessed with Buffy and Angel for years, so all my hard earned money has gone on memorabilia from those shows! But, as Buffy is now at its end, (and DK and CT are getting hotter - or is that just me?!) my attention will now be focused on Enterprise and its very attractive crew! Other actors I like: Connor Trinneer & Scott Bakula (duh!), Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, James Marsters, Brian Krause, Holly Marie Combs, Pierce Brosnan, George Clooney . . . and loads more! My other obse--I mean, focus: Aside from Buffy and Angel, I'm also obsessed with Charmed! Claim to fame: I was Dorothy in my amateur dramatics society's musical of The Wizard of Oz, to name one! I won the Mrs Bedford Rosebowl and the Blue Ribband at the Eisteddfodd (that's a Welsh cultural thing, in case you were wondering) for best solo vocal performance. I have some very good photos of me and James Marsters together (and am hoping to add DK and CT to that short list too!). And, I have been published - yay me! |
Thanks for sharing, Shelley and Karen
.We've got such a big issue this month that we're saving the poll and Top 10 List for next time. Here are the results from last issue’s poll, “Which other DK character would Mallos vanquish first?”
1: Ian (Jungle 2 Jungle) or Blair (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
2: Malcolm Reed or Owen (Chromiumblue.com)
Poor Ian. Was it the hair?
